The consent conversation is over. It lasted 40 minutes. The coordinator covered every section of the document -- purpose, procedures, risks, benefits, alternatives, voluntariness, confidentiality. The participant listened. Nodded at appropriate moments. Made eye contact. When the coordinator reached the end, she asked the question that closes virtually every consent encounter in clinical research: "Do you have any questions?"
