Legally Authorized Representatives: Identifying, Consenting, and Documenting
Covers LAR identification and verification, conducting the triad consent conversation with LAR and participant, managing participant dissent, and the additional documentation requirements for LAR-consented enrollment.
The participant cannot consent for themselves -- but they are still a person in the room
The previous lesson addressed pediatric consent, where the participant's inability to provide independent consent is a function of age and legal status. This lesson addresses a different and, I would argue, more ethically complex situation: the adult participant who cannot consent because their decision-making capacity is impaired.
