I have seen this pattern hundreds of times. Not just in clinical research--in every profession where competence is self-assessed rather than externally measured. The psychological literature has a name for it. Dunning and Kruger published their foundational study at Cornell in 1999, and the finding is stubbornly consistent: the people who are least competent in a given area are the most likely to overestimate their competence in that area, because the skills needed to recognize incompetence are the same skills needed to perform competently.

But here is the other side of that finding, and the part that matters for this lesson: experts tend to underestimate their competence. A coordinator who is genuinely strong in regulatory knowledge may rate herself as "adequate" because she is aware of how much she does not know about, say, international regulatory frameworks she has never encountered.
